Newly available Pherobank Omnilure for Scyphophorus acupunctatus

Scyphophorus acupunctatus

English: Agave weevil
French: Charançon de l'agave

Scyphophorus acupunctatus, commonly known as the agave weevil, is a beetle native to Central and North America that has become an invasive species in various parts of the world. It was first introduced to Europe around 1980 and has since been detected in several countries, including Italy, France, Spain, Cyprus, Greece, Portugal, and the Netherlands.

S. acupunctatus poses a major threat to agave cultivation, as infestations can devastate entire crops. This is particularly critical for the tequila industry in Mexico, where agave plants (Agave tequilana) are essential. Managing infestations often involves costly control strategies, and severe outbreaks can significantly reduce yields and disrupt product supply chains.

In addition to physical damage, the agave weevil acts as a vector for bacterial pathogens such as Erwinia spp., which can cause secondary infections in agave plants. These infections frequently exacerbate the damage caused by the weevil, accelerating plant decay and loss.

The pheromone of S. acupunctatus was identified in 2008 by the research group led by Cesar Ruiz-Montiel as a mixture of short methyl-branched ketones and alcohols.

Only the ketones were sufficient to obtain captures equivalent to those by the quaternary blend.

The pheromone lures for Scyphophorus acupunctatus should be applied in combination with the 'Rhyncho trap', Pherobank article 30310). The colour and shape of this trap makes it much more effective than standard bucket traps. The Rhyncho trap can be used with or without water inside. The best way of applying this pheromone lure is to place it directly in the bucket of the trap. Added pieces of agave to the trap will enhance its efficacy.
